About the Community Diagnostics Vehicle

What is the CDV?

Fujifilm Healthcare UK’s Community Diagnostics Vehicle (CDV) is designed to bring hospital diagnostics closer to patient community, to help address healthcare inequalities across communities.

Building on Fujifilm Healthcare’s 90-year legacy of innovation in medical imaging and diagnostics, the CDV integrates state-of-the-art technologies to enable clinicians to deliver care directly within local communities, helping to reduce the burden on hospitals and emergency departments while improving access and convenience for patients.

Community Diagnostics Vehicle

The Impact

For Patients

The CDV brings care closer to home, making access to diagnostics faster, easier, and more comfortable. With on-site imaging and rapid interpretation, unnecessary hospital visits can often be avoided, allowing patients to receive timely care and recover safely in familiar surroundings.

This approach supports earlier detection and more targeted treatment, reducing the physical and emotional strain of hospital travel, helping patients feel more in control of their care and more connected to their local health services.

For Clinicians

The CDV equips clinicians with advanced portable diagnostic tools for faster decision-making and more efficient patient management. Secure cloud-based connectivity enables real-time sharing of images and results across sites, supporting collaboration and continuity of care. This flexibility allows clinicians to reach more patients and deliver timely, high-quality diagnostics outside traditional hospital settings.

For NHS Systems

The CDV supports the NHS’s long-term shift towards preventative, digital, and community-based care by enabling diagnostic services to be delivered closer to home. This reduces demand on hospitals and enables patients to receive quicker diagnosis, faster discharge decisions, and more appropriate use of hospital beds. Earlier detection and intervention prevent conditions from worsening, leading to better outcomes and fewer emergency admissions.

It helps address system-wide challenges such as workforce pressure and long waiting lists by allowing hospital resources to be used more efficiently, helping Trusts to meet demand without adding to acute capacity. Financially, the CDV delivers measurable savings by cutting unnecessary ambulance transfers, hospital stays, and inpatient costs. By providing rapid, on-site results, it enables clinicians to manage many patients safely in the community, freeing up hospital capacity and supporting a more efficient, sustainable NHS.

For Communities

By embedding diagnostics within communities, the CDV reduces barriers to care and improves access in rural or underserved areas. It strengthens connections between providers and local populations, supporting more proactive, preventative care. For communities, it represents an investment in accessible, modern healthcare that meets people’s needs closer to home.

Community Diagnostics Vehicle

Driving Success in the Community

Since the initial launch of the Community Diagnostics Vehicle, several pilot programmes have been conducted across the UK.

The data collected from these pilots have provided valuable insights into the positive impact of treating patients within their communities. Clearly, the solution not only delivers significant cost savings for the NHS but, more importantly, offers patients a safer and more efficient service. Additionally, for patients transferred to A&E, their images, reports, and diagnoses are immediately accessible upon arrival. This facilitates faster and more effective treatment planning.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust

Cornwall’s geography presents particular challenges for patients, with long travel distances and limited public transport options often making hospital appointments difficult to attend - especially for older or frail individuals.

Over a ten-month period, the service assessed more than 500 patients, many of whom were elderly or living with long-term conditions.

87% of those examined did not require hospital admission, helping to avoid more than 460 ambulance transfers and reduce demand on emergency departments.

Each ambulance avoided transfer represents an average saving of around £459, alongside the additional costs associated with inpatient stays.

Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust

A pilot in Chertsey, Surrey, working in partnership with South East Coast Ambulance Service to support elderly patients who have fallen, helping to reduce unnecessary Emergency Department admissions and develop a new service in line with the NHS 10 Year Plan. The introduction of the CDV has had the following impact:

72% of patients were able to stay at home (Phase 1 and 2 results)

In the first phase of the pilot, 104 hospital admission were avoided (or 312 patients per annum)

Cost-effectiveness: In the first phase of the pilot, total savings were £81,225
